Unless otherwise noted, the Office of Special Scholarship Programs at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) does not administer or sponsor the programs listed on its website. The content of these pages are merely a guide for current undergraduate and professional school students at UIC. The following scholarships have two deadlines: one preliminary, in the spring (April) of student's junior year; and one final, in the fall (August) of student's senior year:
Gates-Cambridge Scholarship one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S. for students who have completed a bachelor's degree, study at the University of Cambridge in England in your field of interest for up to four years

Marshall Scholarship (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S., sends students with a bachelor's degree to a British university to study for a minimum of two years

Mitchell Scholarship (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S. for students who have completed a bachelor's degree, funding for one year of study at a university in Ireland

Rhodes Scholarship (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S., for students with a bachelor's degree to pursue at least two years of study at the University of Oxford in England

 

August

Ozyegin University Summer Program in Turkey (NOT affiliated with UIC Study Abroad) four-week summer program in Istanbul designed to provide international students (e.g. Americans) an opportunity to learn about Istanbul’s pivotal role in history, as well as the Ottoman Empire and Turkish literature with an analysis of formation of modern Turkish identity; scholarships for program costs available to minority students (African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans)

September

Laura Bush Traveling Fellowship (SHORT TERM, PROJECT-BASED TRAVEL ONLY) for college students (undergraduate or graduate) between the ages of 18-25; U.S. citizen eligible for foreign travel; fellowship is intended for American college/university students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad

Fulbright Fellowship  (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) for students who have completed a bachelor's degree, a year abroad conducting research in the country of your choice OR teaching English as a foreign language in one of over 40 countries

Humboldt Foundation German Chancellor Scholarship for Prospective Leaders  for American students who have completed a bachelor's degree, have work experience and have show significant potential in becoming a leader in their fields to spend time abroad being mentored in Germany

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarships awards of $1,000 given to 45 undergraduate students annually across the U.S. for study abroad during the summer, fall, spring or full academic-year following the application deadline; members and non-members of PKP are eligible to apply. (also hasFebruary deadline)

Heinrich Boll Scholarships awards for pursuing a master's or PhD in Germany at universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunsthochschulen’) to students who have excellent academic records, are socially and politically engaged, and have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice

Center for Global Education at Augsburg College different scholarships available to students who study abroad on their programs to Mexico, Central America or Namibia

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan Spring Semester Awards funding for undergraduate students to study abroad in Japan during the following spring semester of an academic year

Gilman Scholarships for Spring Semester  (MUST BE A PELL GRANT RECIPIENT) awards up to $5,000 for study abroad with the possibility of an additional $3,000 to study a critical language

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship for MBA graduates (and other programs) with work experience and a genuine interest in community and public affairs as well as Germany and Europe

American-Scandinavian Foundation  funding for one year of research or study in a country/the countries of Scandinavia

Critical Languages Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes all-expenses-paid scholarships to study critical languages abroad for the summer

Foundation for Global Scholars Spring Semester Scholarship for undergraduate students participating in study abroad programs during spring semester of academic year; four awards with varying criteria

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program  for Americans with bachelors' degrees; opportunity to live in Japan and teach English for a minimum of two years

NSEP Boren Scholarship (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) for current undergraduate students pursuing a study abroad program outside of Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand who are studying a language and a topic critical to national security

 

December

Blakemore Foundation Language Grants  fund a year of advanced language study abroad for college graduates using an East or Southeast Asian language in their careers.

Cambridge NIH Partnership Program  for students interested in biomedical research; program in cooperation with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) culminating in an M.D./Ph.D. from the United States and a D.Phil. or Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom

Oxford NIH Partnership Program  for students interested in biomedical research; program in cooperation with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) culminating in an M.D./Ph.D. from the United States and a D.Phil. or Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom

 

January

Humanity in Action Fellowship for current undergraduates (sophomores, juniors and seniors) or recent graduates; programs that bring together international groups of college students and recent graduates to explore national histories of discrimination and resistance, as well as examples of issues affecting different minority groups today; open to residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States

Kosciuszko Foundation Year Abroad Program for undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors to spend an academic year abroad in Poland at Jagiellonian University

Whitaker International Fellows Program in Bioengineering  for students who have already completed a bachelor's or master's degree, or are currently enrolled in a PhD program, to undertake a project abroad for one year in bio/biomedical engineering

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship for undergraduate or graduate students, conduct research at a public university in Switzerland for 2-3 months

Scotland Saltire Scholarships  up to 200 awards given annually; £2000 towards the tuition fees of a one year Masters course at any of Scotland’s higher education institutions; awards given to students from the following countries: China, India, Canada and the USA

 

February

Sons of Italy Study Abroad and Special Scholarships for U.S. citizens of Italian descent in their junior or senior year of undergraduate study going abroad to Italy or studying Italian during the fall term of the following year; majoring or minoring in Italian language studies at an accredited academic institution

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes  a 3-to-6-week summer program at a world-class UK university or cultural institution; immersive academic, cultural and social experience for freshman or sophomore American students who wish to deepen their knowledge of the United Kingdom and its diverse population whilst developing their communication, research and presentation skills

Anna Sobol Levy Foundation Fellowship for graduating seniors, recent graduates and current graduate students; U.S. citizens under the age of 30; have studied military studies, economic geography, international relations, political science or history; interested in career goals in the armed services, diplomatic corps, international relations, or government or public service; for one year of study at the Rothberg International School of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel

Lemmermann Foundation Scholarship for Italian Study  for master's and doctoral students to undertake language and humanities studies in Rome, Italy, whose time in the country is needed for their graduate research

Spanish Ministry of Education North American Language and Culture Assistants over 2,000 openings all over Spain to be a paid assistant to support English or French teachers in language and culture classes for one academic year (Oct-June)
