Unless otherwise noted, the Office of Special Scholarship Programs at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) does not administer or sponsor the programs listed on its website. The content of these pages are merely a guide for current undergraduate and professional school students at UIC. The following scholarships have two deadlines: one preliminary, in the spring (April) of student's junior year; and one final, in the fall (August) of student's senior year:
Gates-Cambridge Scholarship one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S. for students who have completed a bachelor's degree, study at the University of Cambridge in England in your field of interest for up to four years

Marshall Scholarship (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S., sends students with a bachelor's degree to a British university to study for a minimum of two years

 

August

Ozyegin University Summer Program in Turkey (NOT affiliated with UIC Study Abroad) four-week summer program in Istanbul designed to provide international students (e.g. Americans) an opportunity to learn about Istanbul’s pivotal role in history, as well as the Ottoman Empire and Turkish literature with an analysis of formation of modern Turkish identity; scholarships for program costs available to minority students (African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans)

September

Laura Bush Traveling Fellowship (SHORT TERM, PROJECT-BASED TRAVEL ONLY) for college students (undergraduate or graduate) between the ages of 18-25; U.S. citizen eligible for foreign travel; fellowship is intended for American college/university students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarships awards of $1,000 given to 45 undergraduate students annually across the U.S. for study abroad during the summer, fall, spring or full academic-year following the application deadline; members and non-members of PKP are eligible to apply. (also hasFebruary deadline)

 

November

American-Scandinavian Foundation  funding for one year of research or study in a country/the countries of Scandinavia

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program  for Americans with bachelors' degrees; opportunity to live in Japan and teach English for a minimum of two years

 

December

Blakemore Foundation Language Grants  fund a year of advanced language study abroad for college graduates using an East or Southeast Asian language in their careers.

 

January

Humanity in Action Fellowship for current undergraduates (sophomores, juniors and seniors) or recent graduates; programs that bring together international groups of college students and recent graduates to explore national histories of discrimination and resistance, as well as examples of issues affecting different minority groups today; open to residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States.

 

February

Killam Fellowships for Study Abroad  Forty scholarships (40) of $5,000 per semester for U.S. citizens to spend one semester or a full academic year studying at a university in Canada

Sons of Italy Study Abroad and Special Scholarships for U.S. citizens of Italian descent in their junior or senior year of undergraduate study going abroad to Italy or studying Italian during the fall term of the following year; majoring or minoring in Italian language studies at an accredited academic institution

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes  a 3-to-6-week summer program at a world-class UK university or cultural institution; immersive academic, cultural and social experience for freshman or sophomore American students who wish to deepen their knowledge of the United Kingdom and its diverse population whilst developing their communication, research and presentation skills

 

June

Houtan Scholarship funding for graduate school based on the interest in and study of the Persian and Iranian culture, language and civilization; could include traveling during study

Fund for Education Abroad General Scholarships must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a U.S. institution, planning to study abroad for at least four weeks on high-quality, rigorous education abroad program; up to 15 awards of up to $10,000

Fund for Education Abroad Rainbow Scholarship one award for an LGBT student who meets all of the criteria of the general scholarship, who indicates they want to be considered for this award in their application materials

IES Abroad funding available to students planning to attend study abroad programs sponsored by the IES organization

MASA Israel Grants and (Need-Based) Scholarships for Study for Jewish youth to spend one semester or one academic year studying in Israel

Monbukagakusho Scholarships five different types of awards for non-Japanese nationals to study in Japan

Robert B. Bailey Scholarship for Study Abroad for undergraduate students participating in a CIEE study abroad program; must self-identify as a member of a minority group or a group traditionally underrepresented in study abroad
